Danielle Lloyd (born 16 December 1983, Liverpool) is an English lingerie and glamour model and former Miss England (2004) and Miss Great Britain (2006). She is currently dating Portsmouth and England footballer Jermain Defoe.

She was stripped of her title of Miss Great Britain 2006 after posing for nude pictures featured in the December 2006 of Playboy magazine, and her tabloid-alleged affair with one of the judges, her footballer boyfriend at that time Teddy Sheringham.

FIRST OF ALL, I made it through my first critique of the semester yesterday in my hardest class and recieved comments about the piece like “sophisticated” and “well-advanced”–huzzah!! My lack of blogging has been due to me researching my butt off for the project (“Clothes Make Up Who You Are”) and then actually doing the project. But I’m back today with some fun things for all of you who read this blog!

The reason I wanted to do this is because while researching for this project because I’m going into the topic of vanity, I’ve really grown to love and respect Dita Von Teese more I had ever thought was possible (which is a lot since I’ve been a fan since 2007), and I thought I would share her awesome-ness for all of you. After the cut you will find a new interview with Suicide Girls where she discusses how she creates her shows and the research she does to make them authentic and memorable, and above you’ll find one of my new favorite interviews of hers that she did while promoting her book Burlesque and the Art of the Teese.

Personally, I think what Dita does is an art form and it’s what separates her from people like Jenna Jameson who do it just because they like sex. If you don’t believe me read on for a pretty inspirational interview from the burlesque performer….

Dita Von Teese: Striptease

Dita Von Teese is one of the world’s most dazzling women. The Swarovski-adorned mistress of striptease has done more to preserve and promote the hallowed art of burlesque than any other performer alive today. Her sexy and spectacular shows feature stunning costumes and larger-than-life props, but are always grounded in the purity of the classic art form. Thus they have an innate dignity that never relies on the kind of bump and grind sleaze that many of Dita’s contemporaries mistake for erotica.

In a league of her own, the Michigan born and Orange County raised girl, who once had aspirations of becoming a ballerina, is an international glamour icon. Celebrated both for her performance art and her impeccable vintage style, her world-class status was sealed in October 2006 when she became the first ever featured headlining guest performer at the legendary Crazy Horse in Paris. She returned to the prestigious cabaret club in February of this year for a limited two week run which was so successful that she was immediately booked again for another series of shows the following month.

The hottest ticket in town, Dita’s run at the Crazy Horse attracted such luminaries as Jean Paul Gaultier, Kanye West, Kylie Minogue, and Stephen Spielberg, among others. Her performances are as rare as they are exotic however, in part due to the time and expense they take to conceive. Fortunately those who are unable to witness Dita in the flesh have two new options. The first is a DVD of Dita’s Crazy Horse show. The second is Stripteese, a set of three miniature flip-books books which capture individual facets of her repertoire and come packaged together in a deluxe gift box.

We caught up with Dita to find out more about the books and DVD, her new Opium Den set which was 4 years in the making, her plans for shows in Paris and Vegas in 2010, and her life in the romance capital of the world.

Nicole Powers: From reading your last interview with SG (with Daniel Robert Epstein in 2006), I understand you’re keen that people appreciate the history of burlesque. The format of this set of books harks back to vintage Victoriana. What inspired you to do the mini flip-book format?Dita Von Teese: The photographer, Sheryl Nields approached me with this book idea, and we took it to my publisher. Sheryl and I had worked together on several occasions for magazines and ad campaigns. I always liked working with her a lot, and trusted her to shoot my shows, which is rare for me because with all the time and money it takes for me to build a show, I don’t let just anyone shoot them. But I really love her as an artist and as a person, and I loved her idea for this book. I just showed up and did my hair and makeup and did my show for her as she shot it stop-animation style. The end result is fabulous. I’m happy with the way the three little flip books look tucked inside the velvet-flocked bookcase. It’s been selling well for the holidays.NP:What was the technical process to capture images that would move as you flipped them. Was it done on a still or video camera? And how long did it take?DVT:It was shot on a still camera and on the RED camera. Each show was shot in its entirety and we used the one we liked best. I think we did two days of shooting for it, several months apart from each other because the first was just done for fun, before the idea for the book.NP:The packaging is exquisite. Where you involved in the design of that too?DVT:Actually, for this book, all I did was describe the kind of look I wanted, and then approve it. I’ve always had this obsession with velvet flocked wallpaper, because when I was little, like 5, I remember that the house I moved into has this gold flocked wallpaper in the dining room, and I was devastated that my mother had it torn down. So I always have this flocked wallpaper in my houses since I first moved out as a teenager, and the cover of the book is inspired by it too.

They did a great job. I’ve been working on my step-by-step how to beauty book, so I didn’t have a lot of time to devote to the design of this flip-book, so I kind of left the design to them and was thrilled that it came out so beautifully. I just wanted to pose for the pictures and do the promotion and signings for this book this time around, because my other book Burlesque and The Art of the Teese was an arduous task because I insisted on being hands-on. This time I had to let go a little bit.NP:Stripteese depicts three of your burlesque sets: Bird of Paradise, Classic and Martini Glass. What’s the creative process you follow when you decide to create a new set?DVT:The Bird of Paradise and the Martini are longtime shows of mine, but I wanted to do a third more intimate striptease for this too — “the Classic” — which isn’t a stage show I do. I wanted to make one of the books more of an intimate striptease, and less burlesque-y. So I wore this beautiful magenta silk corset that Mr. Pearl made for me. I think it’s my favorite of the three flip-books.

With regards to the process of actually making a new burlesque number, it’s different every time. Some of the shows I make take about four to six months to create if it’s a real rush, but most of them take much longer. For instance, my newest act, The Opium Den, took about four years to complete because the set is very elaborate, the costume was intense to make, the hand props were difficult, and I had a hard time deciding how I wanted the show to play out, so I kept procrastinating on finishing it.

And the music presented a whole new challenge. I have all my show music custom made for me these days, and so for this Chinese themed show there was a chance to do something really unique with the music. It’s very traditionally cinematic at the start, somewhat dark, then turns ultra sexy, then turns somewhat humorous with some real retro burlesque Chinese music.

For one of the songs I took The Cure’s “Lullaby” and had it turned into this powerful and sexy Chinese song. People go wild over it when it kicks in, because you recognize it, and it’s very powerful. I have this incredible music guy that I work with, he always manages to pull off my absurd ideas. He has the patience of a saint, which is vital when you’re working with someone like me who has absolutely no musical vocabulary.

But every show I make is different and presents new challenges. The three new shows I made for The Crazy Horse were really fun because I got to work closely with the dancers to create shows with them, which I loved. I also recorded two songs for those shows. Singing was a whole new thing for me, but I got offered a record deal from it, which is hilarious to me because I’m really terrified of singing, probably because I hate the sound of my own voice.NP:I understand your longtime friend Catherine D’Lish designs your costumes. I assume this must be quite a collaborative process. How does that work?DVT:Well, she’s a fabulous costume designer, and it was fun all those years when we would work together because we both had this obsession with Swarovski crystal and we would like to see how far we could take it, how many crystals could we get on a costume. I’m sponsored by Swarovski, so we were able to order all these extravagant custom-cut rhinestones in any color, shape and size we wanted, and she would have this amazing team working for her, like a family. It was great because, as a fellow performer, she knows how the costumes have to work, and could figure out inventive ways for the pieces to come off. Catherine has been performing herself a lot more these days, so she’s been shifting focus on her own shows, so this year I decided to work with some other designers for the shows that I did at The Crazy Horse.

I worked with Christian Dior and Elie Saab on the gowns, and Mr. Pearl on the corsets, Stephen Jones did my headpieces, and Christian Louboutin made custom shoes for me. It was amazing to work closely with Elie Saab, he did three gowns made in the haute couture atelier in Paris. There was one insane moment where I asked for a swatch of the fabric one of the gowns was made of, this very fine almost invisible tulle that had silver beaded stars all over it. It’s this long trailing beautiful gown [which has] miles of this gorgeous beaded tulle…So they come back with two things — a piece of plain tulle and a bag of the beads. I had no idea that each and every bead — hundreds of thousands of them — was embroidered on by hand. It was amazing. That’s what true haute couture is. I’m baffled by the details in the workmanship, and of course, shocked that I get to wear them onstage.

Right now I’m working with Mr. Pearl on a new costume. He’s meticulous in his fittings, and has incredible taste, so it’s nice to let it go and trust everything to him. It’s all Swarovski jonquil, which is a beautiful canary yellow, and it’s got tons of yellow curled ostrich. It’s been in the works about two years now because the beadwork is very fine, and the fit of his corsets is beyond anything. Somehow he gets the tiniest waist you can imagine, but he makes the corsets out of this very fine mesh, so it’s hardly there, and is like a second skin. Honestly, no one knows how he does it. That’s why Jean Paul Gaultier and all the designers in Paris enlist him. No one can do what he does!

I’m baffled by the feel and the look of his corsets. I know that when I’m long gone, those corsets he has made for me are going to be the most important pieces of clothing I ever owned. He’s a very good friend, and my Paris apartment is very near to him, so we have fittings and sip violet champagne. Mr. Pearl is obsessed with violets. He always brings me a little bunch of them and he smells of violet perfume. He’s the most elegant man in existence!NP:You’ve been so influential fashion-wise, bringing vintage and burlesque style into the mainstream. You’ve also designed a super-cute T for H&M for their Fashion Against Aids campaign and have a limited edition Wonderbra lingerie line. Do you have any other future projects clothing-wise?DVT:I love working with Wonderbra. It’s been a really great collaboration the past two years. I also have a signature stocking collection. I would really love to branch out into a clothing line, maybe a line that looks at my own vintage clothing collection and recreates some of those amazing lost designs.

NP:Could you see yourself devoting more of your life to fashion design down the line?DVT:I would definitely like to continue working with lingerie, and if the right opportunity comes along that I feel I can put my name on and my energy into, and feel good about, yes, I would like to do more. But I’m careful about which things I lend my name to. I’ve been offered jeans campaigns, and obviously, that wouldn’t make sense for me.NP:Your frequently go en pointe in your shows and are seen wearing pink/red point shoes in the Bird of Paradise images. This question’s for the ballet geek in me (SG actually has a ballet group). Are you traditional in your choice of pointe shoe? Or do you go for a little comfort and modern day technology with a Gaynor Minden type shoe?DVT:I haven’t been dancing on pointe as often as I used to. Somewhere along the way I started having high heels made as backup for all the shows I do on pointe, because I would get so nervous over “real” dancers being in the audience. At The Crazy Horse, all the Paris Opera Ballet stars came to see me, and that was daunting! But I still dance on pointe from time to time onstage, especially for my Powder Compact and Carousel show, and of course for the burlesque Swan Lake [The Black Swan].

And yes, I go for the Gaynor Mindens. A friend of mine with ABT [American Ballet Theatre] told me years ago that they would change my life and make me more stable onstage, and she was right. I’ve been dancing on pointe since I was 11 years old. I learned the right way the hard way and at this point, at 37, I don’t need the extra suffering, and I like the extra flex Gaynors. But I would love to see the SG ballet troupe someday! You would love the music I had made, it’s all the most famous parts of Swan Lake re-recorded in striptease big band style. It’s hilariously genius!NP:Do you still take ballet classes?DVT:Yes, I just started up again the other day. My friend Liz Goldwyn, who also has a fabulous burlesque book called Pretty Things, brought me to a bitch of a Balanchine class. My inner thighs are on fire still! I also used to take private classes with a Russian teacher. I love the flamboyant Russian style. I’m always looking for ballet classes with funny teachers and live piano accompaniment.NP:What else do you do to keep in shape?DVT:I do a lot of Pilates. I work out with Mari Windsor in LA. She’s amazing. I do that about 4-5 times a week. She has this amazing DVD every girl should have. It’s a 20 minute butt and leg workout with a rubber band. I do it when I’m traveling. Sometimes I do yoga too, and then I also have a little trampoline that I take out in my house, and I run and dance on that thing to my favorite obnoxious dance music. It’s a killer cardio workout. I love to eat you see, so I have to work out. I believe that variety is the key to keeping up the momentum and having a successful workout regime.NP:At his point in your career, how many people do you have in your creative team?DVT:Well, still no glam squad, no stylist, no hair/makeup team. I like being self-reliant in that way. I have a few favorite makeup and hair people that I work with on certain shoots, but I don’t use a team for red carpet things or anything like that. I think independence is vital. But I have a manager, publicist, a prop wrangler, a personal assistant and a pet sitter, and I guess I have about three attorneys that specialize in different things. I guess that’s not exactly a “creative” team. My manager is really the only one I work with on a creative level. I can’t live without her. I can count on her for everything. When I’m making a new show, creatively, I usually think about the show and research and hire someone. For instance, I hired trip ropers for roping lessons for my cowgirl show, and I hired a bull rider to teach me how to ride my mechanical-bull lipstick, and yeah, I smoked opium the traditional way to “get a feel” for my Opium Den show. Research!NP:Your shows — and the photos in Stripteese — feature elaborate props. Who designs and builds them?DVT:I work with a few different prop makers. I go to different people for different kinds of projects. I have my favorite welders, foam sculptors, etc… I’m very involved in the creation of the props, and I do a lot of the cosmetic work on them too. Most of the glitters and rhinestones I do myself. It’s therapeutic.NP:My singing teacher always said you should “f*** the lighting guy.” I think he was being a little OTT (he was rather theatrical and flamboyant), but it sure helps if you’re nice to them. In performance (and life) so much is about the lighting. Any tips?DVT:Oh yeah, well I agree. Lighting is so important and I cringe when I see how little attention is paid to burlesque show lighting. I learned a lot at The Crazy Horse in Paris. They’re the masters at lighting naked women to perfection. So when I was performing there, I would keep a sketchpad and draw diagrams of the lighting during rehearsals, and make friends with the lighting team and ask lots of questions. Lighting can make or break you, and beautiful, artistic light is what makes a show look grand and beautiful.

I get really excited when I’m at venues with exciting lighting rigs! And although I don’t go so far as to “f*** the lighting guy,” as your friend suggested, I have been known to send gifts and notes and to hang out with them and “ooh” and “aah” over their talents to show my gratitude. I did a show with someone recently who was dreadful to the crew, and I watched first hand what happens when you throw attitude. Those lighting guys aged her ass 20 years! So yes, make friends with the lighting guy!

The key is light that comes from all angles, especially from underneath and sides. You have to fill the ass with light. No white light, no red light, ever. And speaking of lighting, I always have good lighting in my house too. Dimmer switches in every room!NP:You have a DVD of your Crazy Horse residency coming out. I know in the past you’ve said that you don’t like to film your shows, but after watching the Bettie Page movie the other night it made me feel sad that so much of her work was destroyed under pressure from the government. Your work has been captured for posterity — and, unlike Bettie, you own or get royalties from most of it. That’s got to be a big upside right?DVT:Yeah, I get funny about being filmed, for a few reasons. It’s hard to capture the feeling that one gets when watching a live show, and also I’m not so willing to just hand over these shows that I put all my own money and time and heart and soul into, so it’s rare that I come to an agreement that works for me and makes it worthwhile. But I’ve been filming more of my shows lately. Besides the Crazy Horse DVD, I filmed some shows I did at the Casino de Paris too, which is the big stage Josephine Baker and Mistinguett danced on. I filmed my Opium Den act and some others on that grand stage, and will probably release some of that footage next year.NP:Burlesque is shrouded with such a rich history, and performing at such a historic venue must add a whole new dimension to your work. What have you learnt while working at The Crazy Horse?DVT:The Crazy Horse is amazing. It’s so cool to be backstage with those girls, they’re incredible talents, and they work so hard. They’re like racehorses! So beautiful. The Crazy Horse has been open since 1951, and the list of famous people that have been there to see that show is just mind-boggling. Everyone from Marilyn Monroe, Gypsy Rose Lee, Salvador Dali, Mae West, lots of US presidents.

It’s a very special place. The girls are so disciplined. They get weighed in weekly to keep their ideal weight that is set for them. They’re drop-dead gorgeous, and insanely talented dancers. And the best part is that they all get along, like a team. I spent a lot of time working with them and I love them so much.

It was daunting to go in there the first time. I was the first guest star ever to come in there, so they were rather suspicious of me at first. But I insisted on not having special treatment, and I worked hard, and we discovered a mutual admiration for each other. I don’t have nearly the kind of dance training they have, but they would come to me for advice on other aspects of performing, and they would always come to see my other shows around Paris. I have great friendships with many of the girls. I think they are extraordinary, and I’m glad that The Crazy Horse is seeing a revival. I’m their biggest fan. I think it’s the best show ever!NP:Will there be more Dita shows at the Crazy Horse in 2010?DVT:I’m most likely going to bring the show I did in Paris, the one that’s on the DVD, to the Las Vegas Crazy Horse at The MGM Grand sometime in 2010. It’s a much different show than the one I did there a few years ago. It’s much more elaborate and I do three full numbers instead of just one. And I am also in the process of thinking of the new acts I want to do in Paris for another run.

The thing is that none of my existing shows fit on that intimate stage, so I have to create special shows for their stage. The Crazy Horse is like being in a movie. The audience can see every little gesture. It’s much different than the burlesque I usually perform on big stages, and most of my stage props are too tall to fit on that stage. The Crazy Horse stage is a little more than 6 feet tall to make the girls look very tall. They’re all between 5′8 and 5′10.NP:I understand you’ve recently moved to Paris. Is it really one of the most romantic cities in the world?DVT:I love it. It’s beautiful. I’ve traveled the world and I still can’t find anything nearly as beautiful. I love the architecture and the pride that Parisians have in their city. I’ve been living there part-time, and I love the challenges that being in a new country presents. I love the ways that it also makes me appreciate America too. There are great things about both places. It’s changed my life to have a place in Paris in addition to my place in Los Angeles. I’m really happy that I finally did it. I realized one day when I was talking to an old friend from 15 years ago; I mentioned I wanted to live in Paris and he reminded me I said that way back when. So I was like, “What am I waiting for? Why am I afraid?” I just did it. And it’s not always easy, but I like the independence it makes me feel.NP:What are some of your favorite haunts? And why?DVT:In Paris? There are so many restaurants I love. There’s La Perouse, which is probably the sexiest, most romantic restaurant ever. It’s a very old, antique historic place. You can book these private little rooms, and the waiter rings a bell before entering the room, so you have total privacy in this plush little antique salon. The antique mirrors are still on the walls that bear engravings where ladies checked to see if the diamonds they were gifted were authentic. It’s the best place to seduce and be seduced, and the food is delicious too.

I also frequent a restaurant and bar called Mathis. I saw Yves Saint Laurent there before he passed away. It’s the place to be in Paris, very elegant and the food is divine. I also love to go to a brasserie called Bofinger where I order plates of oysters and bulots. For bars, I usually go to a place called Montana, or The Hemingway Bar at The Ritz. I love to go buy my tea and have lunch at Mariages Freres in the afternoons, and for late night dining after shows I go to a place called Poule Au Pot. They have a gold plaque with my name at my table because I was there every night after The Crazy Horse!

In LA, I don’t go out very often. I go to Chateau Marmont sometimes, but mostly I’m a homebody. I go to bed early and wake up early. I like having the days in LA. I also spend a lot of time in my favorite traditional Korean spas in Korea town. My favorite one is open 24 hours and I go there for three hour long massages and scrubs. It’s cheap and fabulous. And I love to just disappear and sit there with all the girls and watch Korean soap operas.NP:You wrote a chapter on stripping in my friend Carrie Borzillo’s book Cherry Bomb in which you wrote that when stripping one-on-one for someone special you should also “tease him with your words.” Are you a fan of sexting too? And, if so, has it ever got you in trouble?DVT:Oh yes, I love sexy-texting! But I’m also a good a love-lust letter writer. I write with rose-scented red ink on my personal stationery. A stranger recently tried to blackmail me to buy back some love letters I wrote to a boyfriend 15 years ago, and I said, “Feel free to sell them on eBay if you want. What do I care if people find out that I’m romantic!”

That’s one downfall of fame, I get lots of people that want to extort money from me to buy things that they think — hope — will be scandalous for me. Really, what could be scandalous for me? I’m a burlesque dancer!

I really don’t write anything I would be embarrassed of anyway, and I only sexy-message with my beau, and he’s even more discreet about his privacy than I am. I never sexy-texted with guys I was casually dating. Trust is important. And again, I don’t think it’s a big scandal for a burlesque dancer to get caught sexy texting!NP:Being sexy is a lot of fun, but as we peel the layers off we all just want to feel secure and loved. What makes you feel loved and secure?DVT:My very closest friends, the friends I’ve had for twenty years. And my family. It’s nice to be around the people I don’t have to keep up any image for, that I can trust with everything.NP:Having had a romance very much in the public eye, are you keen to keep your private life private at this point? And how possible is that?DVT:It’s really difficult. There’s only so much you can do. Right now, I’m trying to preserve the privacy of a fairly new relationship, but it’s not easy between relentless journalists that won’t let you get away with not discussing personal things, and then there’s paparazzi. Sometimes pictures pop up on the internet and we had no idea whatsoever that we were being followed and photographed, and that’s an odd feeling.

But I accept that people want to know. I know that personally, I don’t like reading endless interviews from actors that refuse to discuss anything but their acting craft. It’s boring. You have to give a little something.NP:I interviewed your ex, Marilyn Manson, recently. We had an hour-long conversation, during which he repeatedly talked about the loss he felt after past relationships and the trouble he’s had dealing with it. I also have another friend going through a tough divorce right now. What advice would you give when it comes to moving on and the mental adjustments you need to make to make that happen?DVT:It’s funny because I’ve been some kind of divorce counselor for a few of my girlfriends that are going through it now. One of my friends wants me to write a book with my little mantras and pearls of wisdom. I’m full of them! I guess the best advice I have is to accept the pain and to know that it’s part of the risk we take in loving. Inevitably we learn from heartbreak and we recover, and hopefully emerge ready to become a better partner for someone new.

In the midst of a hellacious heartbreak, I work my ass off to stay occupied, and I try to imagine myself further down the line when I’m right again, and in love again. I’ve been through enough heartache to know that we don’t ever die from it, and we always find someone better suited to us. And I personally force myself to think hard about what I did wrong and try to get my revenge by being a better person for someone new. I don’t really have any interest in acting unless it’s in films I would actually like to see, so I pass on most of the acting projects that come my way. I really like being true to myself and doing what I do. I have no problem being content to be a burlesque dancer. I didn’t do it as a stepping stone to “bigger” things, I did it because I love it.NP:Stripteese will make an excellent Christmas gift. What’s on your Xmas list?DVT:Mostly I love Christmas because I like seeing my friends and family, and being home for a change, and baking cookies and entertaining. But when it comes to gifts, I really like sentimental gifts, or things I use all the time, like teacups and martini shakers, vintage picture frames, scented candles. It’s easy when you look around my house and see all the stuff I collect. Just stop by an antique store and pick up some silly trinket and I’m happy!

The series, written and illustrated by Tite Kubo, tells the story of a 15-year-old boy named Ichigo Kurosaki who accidentally obtains the power of a Soul Reaper, a Japanese death personification similar to the Grim Reaper, and begins defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife.

The serialized manga has been published in weekly installments since August 2001, and has been collected in 29 trade paperback volumes. Bleach has already been adapted into an ongoing animated television series produced by Studio Pierrot (AN English version airs on Cartoon Network and Canada’s YTV), two original video features, three animated feature films, seven rock musicals, and numerous video games.

-The time Traveler's wife is a melodic love story about a man who falls in love but cannot control his time traveling. This movie does seem to feature some sexuality/nudity but it's pg-13 so a good story for you and the older kids

Richard B. Riddick: Escaped convict, Murderer and John Carpenter Anti-Hero

"All you people are so scared of me. Most days I'd take that as a compliment. But it ain't me you gotta worry about now..."

-Carpenter-esque anti-hero Riddick (Vin Diesel) assesses the situation in Pitch Black.

In my previous post, I described writer/director David Twohy's Pitch Black (2000) as "the best John Carpenter movie not actually directed by John Carpenter." In terms of explanation, this comparison all comes down to the vital character of Richard Riddick (Vin Diesel), and the way that Pitch Black's anti-social hero interfaces with his distinctly imperfect universe.

Specifically, Riddick relates to his world and views his surroundings (and fellow humans) in a manner remarkably similar to the Carpenter anti-hero prototype depicted in the auteur's filmed works from Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) to Escape from New York (1981) to Ghosts of Mars (2001).

Given this postulate, I propose six essential qualities of the Carpenter-esque hero and his world. After noting pertinent examples in Carpenter's cinematic canon, I will describe how Riddick -- at least in Pitch Black -- also fits the bill.

1.) The Carpenter Anti-Hero is a man whose reputation precedes him. He's also a Bad MF..

In Carpenter's oeuvre, the anti-hero is often a notorious man known because of his (usually criminal...) exploits. His deeds have separated him from most of humanity; and the masses gaze at him with a combination of fear, awe, and curiosity.

Napoleon Wilson (Darwin Joston) in Assault on Precinct 13 is a subject of intense curiosity to members of the establishment class, including his jailer, Starker (Charles Cyphers): "You're not a psychopath. You're not stupid," he says "why did you kill all those people?" This question allows us to understand that Wilson is not simply a run-of-the-mill thug, an indiscriminate killer. There was something...else going on when he committed his crimes.

In Escape from New York, Snake Plissken is greeted at virtually ever destination with the same comment; one that establishes his history and mythic stature: "I thought you were dead." In Escape from L.A. (1996), a satiric take on the character, this comment is changed to "I thought you'd be taller." The point, in both circumstances, is that before meeting the anti-hero for themselves, people already boast a pre-conceived, larger-than-life notion of him and his actions.

The anti-hero may be a law-breaker, but he's no ordinary law-breaker. He's much more than that. In Pitch Black, Riddick is described by Jack (Rhiana Griffith) in similar fashion, as an accomplished murderer, a total BMF: "He'd probably get you here, right here, under the chin, and you'd never even hear him. That's how good Riddick is!," he establishes. Earlier, Riddick's captor, Johns (Cole Hauser), notes that Riddick is dangerous "only around humans." And that if Riddick finds you in your sleep, he could well "skull-fuck you." Again, this is myth-making pure-and-simple; a creation of the character as something out of the realm of the ordinary.

Why build-up a character, a criminal, like this? Well, when the moment of dying comes, these various films require a protagonist of extraordinary skill and efficiency; one the audience can have utter confidence in. And, Carpenter is eternally in the anti-establishment camp, so traditional heroes, like policeman, aren't going to do the job. Carpenter's anti-heroes universally-combat members of the establishment too, including Hauk, Malloy, Starker, etc. Riddick has this kind of establishment nemesis as well: the drug-addicted Johns.

2.) The Carpenter Anti-Hero is a Man of Unique and Distinctive Vision. Literally.

The Carpenter anti-hero is universally a maverick "born out of time," to quote Wilson, a man who views the world quite differently than the forces of authority who dominate it.

Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) sees the United States as corrupt and bereft of freedom in both Escape films. John Nada (Roddy Piper) discovers the alien conspiracy behind humanity's existence (and the Republican agenda...) in They Live (1988).

In Pitch Black, Riddick is also a character who shuns authority, and exists only around the periphery of it.

More trenchantly, the "vision" of these characters is all hampered (or perhaps augmented?) in a fashion that visually separates them from the other dramatis personae in the films. Snake wears an eye-patch. John Nada adorns a pair of sunglasses (which he wears throughout the film), so that he can see reality as it is; the very opposite of rose-colored glasses.

Riddick is no different. His eyes have been surgically altered. "When you get sent to a slam, where they tell you you'll never see daylight again, you dig up a doctor, and you pay him 20 menthol Kools to do a surgical shine job on your eyeballs," he tells Jack. This means Riddick can see in the dark (and also see who is sneaking up on him.) Like Snake and Nada, Riddick's vision is literally a quality that separates him from others. The idea that he "sees" differently is critical to an understanding of the anti-establishment character, and we have that in Snake, Nada and Riddick.

3.) The Carpenter Anti-Hero establishes kinship with a woman with perceived comparable qualities.

A long-time admirer of Western director Howard Hawks, John Carpenter often populates his films with the so-called Hawksian woman. Authors Tim Bywater and Thomas Sobchack describe a Hawks woman in this fashion (Introduction to Film Criticism, Longman, 1989, page 72):

"She has a sense of identity beyond her alliances (with high society), and she is committed only to those personal ties she wishes to acknowledge."

Think of Feathers (Angie Dickinson) in Rio Bravo (1959), or Leigh (named after Leigh Brackett) in Assault on Precinct 13. In the case of the latter, Leigh (Laurie Zimmer) is able to cross societal barriers to accept Napoleon Wilson -- a criminal -- as a trusted ally and even a man of honor. In Ghosts of Mars, Melanie Ballard (Natasha Henstridge) is able to put aside her role as hard-boiled cop to team up with the notorious criminal Desolation Williams (Ice Cube). They come to realize that they are, in essence, two-of-a-kind.

In Pitch Black, Riddick similarly detects something kindred in pilot Caroline Fry (Radha Mitchell): they're both survivors; they both understand their situation, as well as the sacrifices that will have to made. Only in Caroline's case, after nearly making a decision that would kill her wards during the crash, she willfully steps back from the moral precipice. She refuses to accept her own survival as the bottom line and actively seeks to save the other people stranded on this pitch black planet of the flying piranhas.

Importantly, Fry also chooses to place her trust in Riddick over his nemesis, Johns, who masquerades as a police officer (but is really a merc). So again, a Hawks-styled self-sufficient woman has put aside established "roles" in society, and selected an alliance based on her own "personal ties" and feelings about which man is more trustworthy.

Riddick mercilessly tests Fry, urging her to leave the other stranded castaways behind, but she beats him at his own game. She shames Riddick by her refusal to act in selfish terms. They may both be tough; they may both be capable, but Fry is connected to the human race in a way that Riddick is not. Riddick thinks he can grow Fry's killer instinct; Fry proves she can nurture Riddick's dormant conscience.

4.) The Carpenter anti-hero is a man been burned by religious faith, though it still has a place in his psyche.

The Carpenter anti-hero is one with few connections to the mortal coil, and yet who feels equally disappointed by the dogma of religion and faith.

In The Thing (1982), Kurt Russell's helicopter pilot MacReady notes that "faith is a hard thing to come by these days." In Assault on Precinct 13, Wilson comments that, as a boy, he met a preacher who told him that, as he grew up, he would "have something to do with death." This odd comment affected him. It was a prophecy that came true.

Riddick also has a relationship with faith that isn't strictly positive. When he is questioned about his religious beliefs by the Imam (played by Carpenter regular and star of The Thing and They Live, Keith David), Riddick rails against him, and against the Divine's role in his life:

"Think someone could spend half their life in a slam with a horse bit in their mouth and not believe? Think he could start out in some liquor store trash bin with an umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and not believe? Got it all wrong, holy man. I absolutely believe in God... And I absolutely hate the fucker."

Incidentally, Riddick's bad childhood also gives him another trait in common with Carpenter anti-heroes such as orphaned Jack Crow (Vampires [1998]), and Nada, from They Live.

5.) Through the Anti-hero's actions, some aspect of "The Order" is changed.

The Carpenter anti-hero is one who, through often his final act, changes the shape and order of things in his world.

In Escape from L.A., Snake Plissken activates the Sword of Damocles and plunges the world into darkness, so that America can start over, and liberty can be re-born.

In They Live, John Nada destroys the alien satellite dish sending constant hypnotic signals to all human beings, revealing the world as it truly is; not through the filter of reality the alien echo chamber has created. In The Thing, MacReady destroys the base, and holds the Thing at bay in the icy winter, even though it means his eventual death.

In an intriguing variation of the Carpenter aesthetic, the order that Riddick changes in Pitch Black involves his own personal code of conduct. After Fry dies, instead of fleeing the planet in the escape transport, Riddick returns to rescue the Imam and Jack. He essentially fulfills Fry's mission. He is shamed by the fact that she has "died for him," (certainly a religious allegory; a kind of Christ-like self-sacrifice from Fry that essentially washes away Riddick's sin). "Not for me!" He complains. He views himself unworthy of Fry's sacrifice, and now must make himself worthy.

After the escape from the planet, Jack asks what should be done if the transport encounters the authorities (and mercs). "Tell them Riddick's dead. He died somewhere back on that planet," Riddick states, an acknowledgment that the change has come from inside his soul. The old Riddick is dead. The Riddick that Fry tried so hard to nurture has finally taken his place.

6.) He is a man whose enemies represent a faceless, unthinking legion; a legion that doesn't recognize individual personality, pain, or even humanity.

The Carpenter anti-hero -- a flawed (but strong) human -- is almost universally pitted against a very specific kind of enemy: an attacking horde that seems to lack the anti-hero's enormous sense of individuality.

The gang in Assault on Precinct 13, Street Thunder, consists of hundreds of undifferentiated goons who keep attacking the police station regardless of personal injury or mortality. They just keep attacking, like robots, or zombies.

Inside New York Penitentiary, Snake encounters the "Crazies," another band of indiscriminate, animalistic killers. Even in Ghosts of Mars, the warrior Martians are not differentiated as individuals on the whole (save for Big Daddy Mars), but rather as a horde. And when one dies, his spirit moves into another body, sort of the ultimate in anonymity and horde-attacking. Likewise, Prince of Darkness also features hordes of homeless people as "cells" manipulated by Satan.

Although not human, the flying dragons of Pitch Black boast some of the same characteristics. They are indeed a swarm; a beast-like enemy that seems able to act both collectively and individually, and on instinct rather than evolved human motives. Riddick defeats them because he can "see" them in a way the others can't. He learns their weak spots.

Given how easily Riddick fits into the Carpenter anti-hero paradigm, Pitch Black is not merely a terrific, scary and engaging horror film (and one of the best of the 2000s), but a production that faithfully pays homage to one of the finest genre directors of the past quarter-century. Thus Riddick joins the ranks of Napoleon Wilson, Snake Plissken, John Nada and Desolation Williams. He is a criminal, a murderer, an outsider, and a maverick.

And when "the tide is getting high" and the "time of dying" is at hand, Riddick is also the one man you absolutely want fighting at your side.

Anyways guys, I was thinking of ways I could wrap up the decade, since every fucking blogger (and their Memaws on Twitter) have been doing for the past week, but honestly? Can I get a "who the hell cares?" Do we really need more nerds losing their shit over The Dark Knight or arguing over why Beyonce's Single Ladies is the best music video ever blah blah blah, am I right? Like, I truly don't give a crap. Sowwy! I know I hurt your feelings, 24 fans, but I just can't get involved in a debate about the Jack Bauer character development being superior to that of Michael Scott's. So let's not talk about movies and TV and how many times George W Bush fucked up or that MJ died. Here is what I will remember the most about the past 10 years:

The visible genitals of Crazy Frog.

I can't remember the first time I saw his tiny, digitally-created weenis; but I do remember looking at the TV and asking out loud:

"Is that...is that the frog's dick?"

And behold! It was! Many cartoons have gone pants-less over the years: Donald Duck, for instance, or Ziggy, and yet none have been progressive and edgy enough to show visible genitalia. Why hide what God and Christ Jesus gave you? Children grow up so fast these days, that they want, nay - deserve, to see a cartoon's genitalia. Especially when it is crooning a classic melody, like the theme to Beverly Hills Cop. Personally, I know that the first time I saw Beverly Hills Cop, I kept thinking to myself "god, this song is catchy. I really hope that two decades from now, someone re-records it using an annoying, digitized car horn and create a visually-jarring character to sing it. Then, put it in the hands of the most annoying, stupid people you can find (American Teenagers) and get them to play it over and over again." Thank you, Jesus! You answered my prayers! Now...add a penis.

I also love that designer Erik Wernquist (who created the true high-art that is Crazy Frog) made sure to give the little guy a helmet (safety first), tiny leather vest, and goggles...which would mean he is operating some kind of motor vehicle. Now, I'm not a member of the book-reading liberal elite, but can I just go ahead and assume that placing your genitals against the hot metal of a motorcycle might not be advisable? But Crazy Frog isn't a normal frog; he's crazy. Crazy enough to cause a significant amount of scarring and damage to his testicles on the searing-hot body of his motorcycle. Well, I guess that's why they call him Crazy! (Lack of impulse control and self-harming behavior are often tell-tale signs of mental illness).

But if the visible sex organs of an animated frog represent the zeitgeist of the '00s, then what can we forecast for the next 10 years? Will we finally see our first televised animated defecation? Maybe Pixar will work a weird sex scene into their next film? Who knows. But I do know this: 9/11, the first Black American President, the death of the King of Pop, me graduating High School...all of this stands second only to the junk of a cartoon frog. Meep meep, see you in '010 friends!!

rifacendosi infatti al celebre telefilm americano con protagonisti ross (david schwimmer), rachel (jennifer aniston), chandler (matthew perry), monica (courtney cox), joey (matt leblanc) e phoebe (lisa kudron), in questa edizione i protagonisti sono 6, tre donne e tre uomini, proprio come nel telefilm. ma questa volta non siamo a new york ma a milano, non ci sono due appartamenti e il central perk ma solo una casa spiata da 18 telecamere, 24 ore su 24.

CULT MOVIE REVIEW: Collapse (2009)

Forget Orphan, Pandorum or Zombieland, the Chris Smith documentary Collapse is one scary-as-hell movie. Basically, it's a talking-head documentary about the end of the modern world. And it features one riveting speaker at center stage: a man named Michael Ruppert.

Some critics and journalists uncharitably term Ruppert a conspiracy theorist and others have labeled him an alarmist. Yet there's one thing you absolutely can't dispute after watching this film. The man is absolutely spell-binding; electric.

When Ruppert expresses himself, he does so with such great confidence, such incredible intelligence, you virtually hang on every syllable. He's profound and he's compelling, but, of course, what we really want to know is this: is he also right? Is he predicting the shape of things to come?

Over an 82-minute span, this former Los Angeles Police officer and self-described "cartographer" -- who maps how the world really works, not the way we think it works -- describes in excruciating detail why the end is nigh not just for America, but for the entire industrialized world.

For human civilization itself.

The lynch-pin, of course, is Peak Oil. Oil is the very commodity that allows for the production of plastic, that enables modern farming, that helps us build electric plants and nuclear reactors, and more. Take oil out of the human equation, and suddenly everything from the food distribution chain to commuting to your day-job is right out the window. Goodbye Wal-Mart. So long, Target.

What's worse, according to Ruppert, is that the world has no realistic Plan B. There's no back-up paradigm to keep society solvent, secure and productive once oil runs out. Ruppert also alleges that the CIA has known about Peak Oil since the 1970s, and that Dick Cheney's secret energy task force in 2001 concerned this very topic; how to secure the oil fields of Iraq in what is, essentially, a resource war end-game.

In riveting fashion, Ruppert escorts the audience right through every detail of the Peak Oil scenario, explaining why A.N.W.R. drilling, Arctic Drilling and even new Iraq pipelines are -- at absolute best -- momentary solutions to the crisis. Furthermore, Ruppert dismisses Ethanol, electric cars and other "alternatives" with withering but indisputable logic. Without oil, you can't make tires, he reminds us, so what the hell are electric cars going to ride on? Finally, Ruppert does hold out some sliver of hope for solar and wind power.

Late in Collapse, Ruppert mentions Elizabeth Kubler-Ross's five stages of grief, and notes that the modern world is now firmly ensconced in the stage between denial and anger. And that more anger is on its way, as more of us realize a paradigm of "infinite growth" is contrary to the very laws of physics.

To boil down "infinite growth," what Ruppert is saying here is that our economy isn't going to get better...not so long as money and oil are finite commodities. What he's saying is that we're in for more wars to control the last drops of oil. What he's saying is that our way of life is unsustainable.

And if you watch Collapse, you'll see a man who is absolutely anguished over what he believes. Ruppert's beliefs have made him Public Enemy Number #1 to many in rigid ideological circles (think Cheney), a pariah to others, and just a nutcase to the masses. Given this, Ruppert seems to have made no recent emotional attachments to other human beings, though he loves his dog, taking long walks on the beach, and rock'n'roll music.

Collapse concerns global apocalypse, but in some meta-fashion, it's actually about Michael Ruppert's personal apocalypse. What he knows -- or what he thinks he knows -- keeps him isolated, alienated and marginalized. And he will absolutely not compromise his beliefs. No matter what. He likens himself to a German citizen in Hitler's Third Reich; one who could see, ultimately, Hitler's destination and the pain and trauma it would cause the world. If Ruppert were living in that time and place, he would never put down his beliefs and go along with Group Happy Think. And he feels the same way today: he's not about to stop conveying his message of collapse when there's the chance -- even a slim chance -- that he will be heard by someone who can come along and change things.

"We're trapped by old ideas," Ruppert states at one point (and I may be paraphrasing a little). He insists we need a President like Thomas Jefferson who will spark a revolution. Not a violent, physical, bloody revolution but one of fresh ideas, of new thoughts. We need to tear down the conceits we have blindly accepted for decades and start again, he says, with the concepts of balance and sustainability replacing dead ideologies like socialism, communism and -- yes -- capitalism. As Ruppert points out, all of those systems of belief are predicated on the idea of infinite growth.

Throughout Collapse, Michael Ruppert makes his case in a compelling manner, and one bordering on arrogance. When questioned repeatedly about "human ingenuity," he never really answers. Isn't it possible to *think* our way out of this brewing crisis? He doesn't seem to think so, but the movie suggests that Ruppert is as trapped in his old ideas as are the people he so vociferously criticizes. He has -- for good reason, no doubt -- lost hope. He sees only a coming "suicide" of the human race on the horizon.

I agree with Ruppert on the facts (about Peak Oil, about the love of money being the root of all evil, and on the need for a new renaissance in human thought), yet throughout the film I couldn't completely buy into his doomsday interpretations.

Here's why: human beings remain adaptable and inventive. Oil has brought us great riches in the last 120 years, but it wasn't "oil" that imagined X-Rays, CAT scans or MRIs. It wasn't oil that mapped the human genome in less than twenty years. It wasn't oil that conceived the cure for Polio, or invented the Internet. Resources are limited here on Earth, it's true, but the human mind's capacity to grow, evolve and seek new knowledge is infinite. There are probably a million minds in America today working on the problem of Peak Oil, and also considering realistic energy alternatives.

Necessity is the mother of invention, and the great sweep of human history has always been towards improving the human condition. I don't believe we're going to sacrifice everything we hold dear because oil runs out. We will transition (a term Ruppert also uses) -- and there will be some tough times -- but I believe we will endure, and ultimately prosper. That's why my favorite part of Collapse involves Ruppert's stirring lecture on two countries that have been forced to transition: North Korea and Cuba. In North Korea, Ruppert tells us, there was starvation and death after the collapse of the Soviet Union, primarily because it was a top-down, centralized country. In Cuba by contrast, the government liberated and encouraged the people, telling them to take local ownership of their own survival and food-growing facilities. That's actually what happened, with a sort of mini-boom of organic gardening taking hold across the nation.

So yes, ninety-nine percent of all life forms that have ever evolved on Earth have suffered extinction.

But again, alone among these life-forms, man boasts the capacity to re-build the world to his liking; and even seek resources beyond the limits of the Earth. Our understanding of our universe is growing at a rapid pace; perhaps even a rapid enough pace to out-march dangers like over-population and Peak Oil.

Ruppert would no doubt call me a Pollyanna (or at the very least ask me what energy source will power our rockets when oil runs out...) but, as Collapse makes plain, for this man the sky has already fallen. The film neither endorses nor rejects Ruppert's view of things, but instead paints a picture of a man who could be a modern Cassandra...or who may have trapped himself in a purgatory of his own depressing construction.

As citizens of planet Earth, we should deal with cold, hard facts -- yes. But we should also realize that no single doomsday outcome is pre-ordained. To quote a famous science fiction franchise, there's no fate but what we make. And even though we're silly, argumentative creatures, we've accomplished amazing things during our ascent. We've touched the stars.

A thousand years ago, there are many people who would have said such an accomplishment was against the laws of physics too. But we did it, and we're still here. How did we do it? Creativity, imagination, team-work, a sense of belief in ourselves, in our community. Michael Ruppert understands these elements are important, but he is so alone in his own life, it appears, that perhaps he doesn't give these variables the weight they deserve when calculating catastrophe.

Oh my god, where do I start? It's like a Where's Waldo of shitty D-list celebrity news! First things first, we have the Duggars (who's first names I care not to Google) posing with a very tiny baby bird. I'm sorry, I've just been told it's their child. Their 19th child, which would mean those two have thrown the hot dog down the hallway at the very least 19 times. Ick. Nast. I just can't this morning. I was going to make a joke about him not wearing condoms because he "can't feel anything" - but come on, how does he even feel anything WITHOUT a condom? Her vagina is probably permanently dilated to 10 centimeters. He probably has to get her pregnant the same way they do it to horses (don't Google that).

The former beauty queen named Celina Jaitley, has already dabbled in Telugu and Kannada films, now wants to work in a Bengali film, preferably one with Rituparno Ghosh.

Hot Celina Jaitley said in her latest interview that, 'I have spent a lot of time in West Bengal and this is the reason I can easily associate myself with the place, culture and the language. I would really love to work in a Bengali movie because I feel they make very emotional and interesting movies. The way they weave stories is fascinating. They simply touch the human chord. I would love to work with Ritu-da (Rituparno Ghosh). This would be one of my targets for the next year.’

ABC news correspondent Dan Harris interviewed author of the controversial new book ''10 Things I Hate About Christianity: Working Through the Frustrations of Faith.'' ABC is featuring former rocker, ex-pastor, and new writer Jason T. Berggren as the subject of two separate segments due to the national attention his book has been attracting with his candid approach to faith.

According to author Jason T. Berggren, the Bible is boring, praying doesn't work, and Christians are self-righteous. Those are a few of the emotionally charged subjects Berggren answers for in the first of two interviews which debuted online this week on ABC's video news blog The Quick Fix. Berggren discusses openly the challenges he has faced over the 20 years of his faith journey as chronicled in his bold new book ''10 Things I Hate About Christianity: Working Through the Frustrations of Faith.''

News correspondent Harris describes the book as "a fascinating and rather risky critique of Christianity." The assessment seems accurate based on recent comments gathering on ABC's site and around the web. Berggren openly admits hate is a very strong word and reveals that he wrestled deeply with using the term. In the end, he decided it was the best way to describe his angst-ridden frustration, which is how he justifies the use of the term. Berggren emphasizes that this is not a closed and bitter anger. It's the type of deep dissatisfaction that can be a motivator towards personal growth and forward momentum.

Berggren highlights the sub-title when clarifying this, "It's working through the frustrations of faith." Berggren explains that he doesn't just point out problems in the 10 foundational areas of his faith that he has constantly had to work through over the last 20 years, but backs them with his own personal resolutions. He acknowledges that many may not come to the same conclusions, but the author feels that others will be helped in their own spiritual experience as they read about his.

tMF Featured Trailer: Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

When it was announced that Oliver Stone would direct the sequel to his own 1987 film Wall Street, the unified reaction was, “Why?” for a number of reasons. Wall Street isn’t the first movie that comes to mind when you think of movies that need a sequel and definitley not after 23 years. Not to mention that Stone hasn't made a decent movie in over a decade. His last outing, W., lacked the bite that made the director famous, so every part of this seems unneccesary.

Despite any reservations you may share, this first teaser is pretty good. I would go so far as to say it made me want to see the movie. When the trailer alone does that, it has done its job. The current financial climate is certainly a playground for this type of story and it will be interesting to see how differently Stone handles this story today versus where it was in the mid 1980s. Whether or not the movie will be worth it remains to be seen but for the time being, consider my interest peaked.

9:08 pm – With all of the extra nominees this year, I’m wondering how many people got cut from bringing guests this year. I see that Demi left the always trashy Ashton Kutcher back home, to everyone’s relief. I just checked, and he is not tweeting about the Academt Awards, either.

9:14 pm – Hey, didn’t SJP and Robert Downey Jr. date back in the day? Just caught that look she gave him.

9:15 pm – And, Best Original Screenplay goes to – The Hurt Locker by Mark Boal. Too bad a man from Michigan is suing his ass over the screenplay rights!

9:18 pm – RIP John Hughes. I’d just wished Claire and Ferris were up on stage rather than old Molly Ringwald and “long-in-the-tooth” Matthew Brodderick.

9:21 pm - Don’t You Forget About Me was my 8th grade class song.

9:22 pm – Some of the Brat Pack has not aged well at all. Ally Sheedy, omg, I am so sorry.

Did you catch The Bachelor wedding last night? Jason Mesnick and Molly Malaney tied the knot. I was never really a Jason fan... and didn't particularly care for Molly either, so I watched halfheartedly. BUT, I do have a few things to say. (Shocker.)

Um. Her gorgeous Monique Lhuillier dress was getting ruined by the rain. Like, ruined. Soaked and destroyed. Not to mention the Manolo Blahniks. And her Ken Paves hairdo and beautiful makeup. Why, why, why didn't they have an indoor option just in case sunny Cali decided to open the floodgates? ABC, get it together! Jason and Molly didn't really seem to mind too much though. I guess that's what true love is all about. That or they're thinking, "well, at least we didn't have to pay a dime for this shindig."

Despite my skepticism, I will say this... They do really seem like they are in love. And that's nice. It also makes me feel like watching The Bachelor isn't a complete and total waste of my time...

Google Buzz is About Protecting GMail's Ad Dollars, Not Social Networking

One of my chief issues with Google Buzz is that there's no "there." Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc all have destination sites or apps that allow the user to mentally switch contexts from one-to-one/one-to-few communication to one-to-many. Mike Elgan touches on this here.

This got me wondering: why didn't Google build a hub for Buzz to begin with? I suspect the reason is simple. With Buzz, Google isn't trying to create a new social network. Rather, it's trying to sure up GMail - a major source of ad revenues - from the forthcoming Facebook onslaught.

Even though Gmail has hundreds of millions of users, they actually have much to fear. The enemy is Facebook. With its integrated chat, Facebook Connect and its forthcoming full-featured mail product, Titan, the social network giant has a good shot at syphoning users from Gmail just as Google did to Yahoo Mail and Hotmail half a decade ago. Ponder that.

In addition, here are some of my other thoughts on Google Buzz...

After playing with it for a few days, there's definitely a lot I like. I still don't see it going mainstream - especially given the privacy kerfuffle. This will only scare mainstream users. However, that said, I bet Buzz will become an important niche player for enthusiasts much like Friendfeed was during its heyday. What's more it will encourage everyone else to up their game.

Yesterday on Buzz I outlined 20 ways it can improve. The product team, notably Bradley Horowitz, chimed in and said they are taking all feedback seriously. This weekend's privacy tweaks back up words with action. What else are we missing?

Finally, tips are rolling in around the web. The Next Web and Google Operating System blogs have great tip round-ups. Most notably Google Operating System details how you can search all public updates, even people you're not following (#8). They also reveal how to save these as persistent searches (#9). As you can see from the screen grab below, this is a really handy way to search social content from within Gmail.
